The 2000 World Series was the championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB) in 2000. During the 96th World Series,[1] crosstown rivals, the two-time defending World Series champions and American League (AL) champion New York Yankees and National League (NL) champion New York Mets, squared off in a best-of-seven playoff. As the Yankees won their third consecutive championship and 26th overall, they defeated the Mets four games to one. The series was often referred to as the "Subway Series", referring to the longstanding matchup between New York baseball teams; it was the first World Series played by two New York teams since the 1956 World Series, and the first since the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers moved west to California (as the current San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers, respectively) in 1958 and the formation of the Mets in 1962. This World Series showcasing teams from the same city or state, was a rare gem, not seen since '89 with the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. Derek Jeter, the Yankees' shortstop, snagged the title of World Series Most Valuable Player.
